Cyanide Management in Gold Mining: An Investor Due-Diligence Guide

Cyanide can be used to dissolve gold from finely ground ore or crushed material, making it an important part of many gold-recovery circuits. The investment question is not simply whether a project uses cyanide. It is whether the operator has the engineering controls, trained people, monitoring systems, transport safeguards and financial resources to manage it throughout the mine lifecycle.

Look beyond the processing plant

Cyanide-management risk begins before delivery to a mine. Investors should examine the manufacturer, transport route, packaging or bulk-delivery method, security arrangements, unloading procedures and emergency coordination along the supply chain. At the site, storage, mixing, tanks, pipelines, ponds and waste streams require different controls.

The International Cyanide Management Code addresses cyanide production, transport, storage, use and decommissioning for gold and silver mining. Its standards also cover worker safety, emergency response, training, stakeholder dialogue and financial assurance for cyanide-related decommissioning.

Engineering controls should be visible in the evidence

A credible review should identify secondary containment around tanks and pipelines, inspection and preventive-maintenance schedules, water-balance controls, leak detection, operating limits and procedures for abnormal conditions. Monitoring should address process performance as well as potential effects on surface water, groundwater and wildlife.

The World Bank Group’s mining EHS guidelines are another primary reference for recognized environmental, health and safety practices in mining. The applicable design must still reflect site-specific climate, water conditions, geology, processing method and local regulation.

Emergency readiness is an operating capability

An emergency plan is useful only when people, equipment and communications can execute it. Investors should look for defined incident scenarios, trained responders, drills, medical arrangements, community notification procedures and access to suitable response materials. The plan should cover transport incidents as well as releases or exposures at the mine.

Ask who has authority to stop work, how incidents are reported, what lessons from drills are tracked and whether off-site responders understand the hazards. Contractors should be included where they handle, transport or maintain cyanide-related systems.

How to interpret Cyanide Code certification

The Cyanide Code is a voluntary certification program. Participating operations are evaluated through independent third-party audits on a three-year cycle, and audit results provide useful evidence about management systems at a stated time. Investors should verify the exact operation, audit date, certification status and any corrective-action plan rather than relying on a company-level statement.

Certification does not replace laws or permits. The Code itself explains that it complements regulatory requirements and does not address every mining risk, including the full design and construction of tailings impoundments or all long-term closure issues. A certified operation therefore still requires broader technical, environmental and financial due diligence.

Costs and liabilities matter

Cyanide controls affect capital and operating budgets through containment, monitoring, laboratory work, training, certified transport, emergency equipment, detoxification where required and facility decommissioning. Underfunding these systems can create safety, environmental, schedule, legal and reputational consequences.

Review whether the financial model includes recurring monitoring and maintenance as well as final decommissioning. Compare the closure provision with the actual cyanide facilities and the regulator’s requirements. A low processing-cost assumption has little value if it excludes controls needed for reliable operation.

Investor questions to ask

Strong cyanide management is evidence of operational discipline. Investors should expect traceable procedures, current audits, transparent monitoring and enough funding to maintain controls from procurement through closure.
